A big day: new Illustrator-style tools, phone and tablet support, account emails, and a round of fixes to exports and security.
New in the editor
- Clipping masks. Select artwork with a shape on top and press Ctrl/⌘ 7 (or Arrange → Clipping mask). The top shape clips everything below it. Alt+Ctrl/⌘ 7 releases it. Masks work in the editor, thumbnails, and PNG, SVG and PDF exports.
- More Pathfinder options. Divide, Trim, Crop and Minus back join Unite, Subtract, Intersect and Exclude.
- Offset path. Draws a new outline around a shape, or inside it with a negative number, with sharp, round or bevel corners.
- Outline stroke. Turns a stroke into a filled shape you can edit.
- Create outlines (Shift+Ctrl/⌘ O). Turns text into letter shapes, so a logo looks right without the font. Kerning, letter spacing, rotation and accented letters are kept.
- Copy and paste with other apps.
- Copy puts your selection on the clipboard as SVG, for Figma, Illustrator or code.
- Paste accepts screenshots and images, SVG from other apps, and shapes copied from another Markwork tab or file, with nothing lost.
Phones and tablets
- On phones, the tools run along the bottom of the screen, the properties panel opens as a sheet from the bottom, and less-used header buttons move into a More (⋯) menu.
- Press and hold a shape to open the menu that right-click opens on a computer.
- Bigger buttons, fields and selection handles on touch screens. Fields no longer make iPhones zoom in when tapped.
Accounts and email
- Confirm your email. New accounts get a confirmation link. The account page shows whether the email is confirmed and can resend the link.
- Forgot password. The sign-in screen can now email a reset link, replacing "contact support". Reset links work once, for an hour.
- Security emails when a password or account email changes.
- Emails can be sent through your own mail server (SMTP), Resend or Postmark.
Design
- Properties panel sections fold up, and the app remembers which ones you folded. Rarely used sections start folded.
- The top of the properties panel shows what's selected: a thumbnail, the name and the kind of shape.
- Selection handles are white with a purple outline, so they're easy to see on any artwork.
- Pathfinder buttons explain themselves on hover.
- New credits page at
/credits, listing the people behind Markwork and the open-source projects it uses. The "Made by · Sponsored by" line moved from the home page to this page. - "Demo" labels no longer appear on the real (server) version of Markwork.
- New app icons, so Markwork can be added to a phone's home screen.
Search and sharing
- Clearer page title and description for search engines, plus a feature overview on the home page.
- Link previews with an image when Markwork is shared, including richer Discord previews with buttons.
robots.txtandsitemap.xml, and real "page not found" responses for unknown addresses.- The home page shows up faster: fonts no longer hold up the first paint.
Fixes
- PDF export:
- Rotated and flipped shapes now keep their rotation and flip.
- Artboards anywhere on the canvas export correctly; before, some came out shifted or blank.
- Files with images are valid PDFs again.
- Gradients, multi-line text, accented characters, artboard backgrounds and transparent images all come through.
- PDFs are also smaller.
- PNG export now matches the editor for shapes with holes.
- Hovering over the active tool no longer hides its icon.
- Ungrouping a clipped group now releases the mask too, instead of leaving a hidden shape behind.
Security
- Opening a project file, or pasting from the clipboard, could run code hidden in a crafted file. Everything loaded from files, the cloud or the clipboard is now checked first, and unsafe values are dropped.
- "Forgot password" gives the same answer whether or not an account exists.
